Day
3
Njunjes - Tarrekaise
6 km
A short hike with some ups and downs in the beginning, followed
by a small alpine plateau, and finished with birch forests and flowering
fields.
Today's hike begin with a strenuous climb right
after we enter the humid grounds of the birch forest, just a few
hundred meters from the Njunjes cabin. As we push ourselves further
up the hillside on the narrow and winding trail, the sumptuous vegetation
covering the ground is surprising us again as if placed here by
mistake.
After about 1 km of hilly jungel trails, we reach a plateau again
with an alpine character. This is at the river bend, and from here
we can see a new set of mountains that will be in front of us until
day 5. On the other side of the bend, the trail again descends down
to the valley. The last 4 km to the Tarrekaise cabin, we walk through
humid birch forests and flowering fields.
An ancient Saami sacrificial ground can be reached shortly after
the descent from the alpine plateau. It is clearly visible from
the trail and in addition to being interesting on its own, the slopes
up to the place are botanically interesting.
Today the trail becomes more stony, and it is not as easy to walk
as the previous day between Kvikkjokk and Njunjes.
