Today's trail, 15 km

Photos from the hiking trail between Såmmarlappa and Tarraluoppal.

Today's hike will take us above the tree line. From 540 m down at the Såmmarlappa cabins, up to 700 m at Tarraluoppal.

Jungle-like trail far above the arctic circle

The beginning of the trail take us through the last stretches of the kind of dense greenery we have gotten used to since our first day in Kvikkjokk. Can you see the sign to the right in the picture? It is not very easy to read what it says, even when you stand right in front of it, but it shows the direction to "Holmbom's Bathtub" a few hundred meters down the slope.

Duckboards on the alpine plateau above the tree line

Little by little we reach higher altitudes. Subtle changes in vegetation and scenery make us anticipate a new order of things.

Dwarf cornells along the trail, here a smooth stone surface.

Looking back, we can see the snow covered side of Staika 10 km away.

Flowering fields down in the valley

A suspension bridge help us cross the last brook right before we enter into the Padjelanta National park.

From here on we are going to hike in a national park, and a stricter set of rules apply. For example, we are not aloud to pick stones or flowers to take with us as souvenirs. But you are still aloud to walk as you wish, you are not confined to the trail. It can be a bit cumbersome to walk beside the trail though, and the trail usually goes where it's fastest and easiest, so most of the hikers opt for it anyway. And of course, if you follow the trail you won't get lost.

Towards the end of the day we reach the alpine highlands. Now you can keep your eyes and binoculars ready, this is the country of wolverines, polar foxes and snowy owls. Just keep in mind that these are rare animals and you are not guaranteed to see any of them.
