Day
5
Såmmarlappa - Tarraluoppal
15 km
Today the trail start to pick up some altitude.
We'll enter Padjelanta National Park and at the end of the day we
penetrate the tree line.
When we continue from Såmmarlappa and leave the cabins behind
us, we also leave the Tarra river. We will still follow it upstream
along the valley, but now we are picking up height and can only
enjoy the river from a distance. The trail is now definitely going
upwards. Slowly but steadily.
After about 5 km we enter the Padjelanta National Park. Long stretches
of bogs and duckboards alternate with dry moors and open white-birch
forests. About 5 km before the Tarraluoppal cabins we enter altitudes
where white birches have no access. 1 km before we reach Tarraluoppal
there is a stream to be forded. It could be a piece of cake like
so many before, but it could also require us to put on our wading
gears ones more.
The Tarraluoppal cabins are built on a small hill between a river
and a large swampy area with willows. The marsh below the cabins
is a mosquito heaven. Here is their last bastion this side Padjelanta
tableland. This is where they keep their best troops.
