Day
2
Kvikkjokk - Njunjes
13 km
The hiking begins. The trail is mostly easy to walk with little
or no stones or roots on the path, and with no elevation to speak
of. When we arrive at Njunjes the landscape turn more alpine and
barren.
The day starts with a short boat ride a few km
upstream the Tarra River. While the sound of the small outboard
motor blend with the silence, a scenery with mountains and our first
glacier in the distance unfolds itself.
A short moment of silence and contemplation. This is for real now.
From the landing-stage we hit the forest trail.
In the very beginning the forest is comprised mostly of birch but
soon the leaves give way to needles, and we find ourselves in a
blueberry forest with pines and firs. Wetter areas with fern and
horsetail alternate with dry, sandy moors and small bogs. Occasionally
the scenery opens up and we can see distant peaks as well as mountains
closer to the trail.
The trail roughly follow the river upstream the Tarra Valley, and
there are many beautiful places right by the water to rest. And
to take photos and cool your feet.
Our goal today, the Njunjes cabin, is built below an impressive
looking mountain side. A suspension bridge offer the possibility
to explore the other side of the river, and its slowly ascending
mountain slopes with crowberries, alpine bearberries, low growing
willows and a few lone white-birches. The area around Njunjes offer
a clear view to all directions, and this is the first time we can
really feel the sensation of being in close contact with the alpine
nature around us.
