Sarek is considered to be the roughest, toughest
and wildest of all the nature areas in Sweden. There are no cabins
to stay in inside this National Park, and there are no prepared
trails. Just 200.000 hectares of pristine wilderness. Sarek has
attained almost mythical proportions within the Swedish outdoor
community.
Sarek National Park is surrounded by two other national parks,
Padjelanta
and Stora
Sjöfallet, and other protected nature areas nearby. From
the nearest public road you have to walk (or pay for a 4-wheel
transportation) 10 kilometers to reach the national park. Sarek
is far away from cities, Jokkmokk being the closest 130 kilometers
away, and it is part of the 940.000 hectare Laponia World Heritage
site, a nature area with no permanent settlements. If you can
picture yourself carrying a heavy back pack in mountaineous terrain
for days, you are in for an awsome nature experience.
Previous experience?
Even though previous alpine experience is recommended, this is
not a technically difficult or physically extremely tough hike
even if you don't have it. But it would be good if you have some
experience of carrying a heavy back pack in mountainous terrain
and sleeping outside in a tent for at least a few days. Just to
help you decide if this is what you really want to do. We will
be far away from anywhere for a long time, and helicopters are
not aloud to land in the national park except for emergencies.
A German guy "Tilo" made a short solo
adventure in Sarek 2003, and his story might be of interest
to you.
Slow pace
This package is a total of 12 days, including 2 days for arrival
and departure. The total hiking distance is about 75 km, which
means that we are in no hurry and can hike in a comfortable slow
pace and enjoy the scenery, clean air, and silence without getting
too exhausted. Most of the days are spent above the tree line.
We will hike mostly in areas without trails and sometimes
the terrain need a little bit of extra
attention when walking, but there are also some steep parts where
extra care need to be taken.
Day 1
Arrival to Gällivare where I will meet you. A helicopter
transfer will take us to the Sitojaure cabins.
Day 2 - day 10
We have 9 days to make 75 km. I know it is possible to walk faster
than that, but that`s not what this is all about. I want to give
you the chance to walk around without a heavy back pack and to
forget about all the stress of ordinary life. A chance to experience
it all in your own pace and to really get in touch with the silence
and wilderness. The toughest part will be in the beginning when
our back packs are packed with food and our bodies and minds are
not yet used to what they are experiencing. It is going to take
about three days before we feel mentally comfortable with the
situation.
Day 11
We arrive in Aktse, one of the main entry points to the national
park and surrounding nature areas, and if we haven`t met other
people while hiking in the mountains we sure will here. After
a helicopter transfer to Saltoluokta, a Mountain Lodge 30 km up
north, we can relax in a sauna and have a farewell dinner in the
restaurant.
Day 12
A helicopter transfer back to Gällivare airport and time
to say good by.
