This is possibly the most convenient and "cutest" of
all the hiking packages offered by slowlife.se.
You will stay in double rooms in a new building called"Laponia"
with attached private toilet and shower in each room, and there
is a common use sauna in a separate building. Breakfast and dinner
is served in the station`s main building, a log house close to
hundred years old, with the original furniture still being used.
During day time we will be hiking in the area and bring a lunch-box
with us when necessary.
The trails are easy to walk and there are no need to carry heavy
back packs. At this time of the year the nature has changed to
strong reds and yellows and the mosquitoes
and other biting insects are a thing of the past. Clear nights
there are good chances to see northern lights.
Itinerary
We will stay 5 nights at the saltoluokta Mountain Lodge and make
different short trips in the area three of the days. One day is
for free activities + one day each for arrival and departure.
The day trips ar not technically difficult or physically tough,
but you need to be able to walk 15 km on nature trails. Depending
on weather conditions and your wishes, we can choose to make the
day-trips in a different order from below.
Day one
I will meet you at Gällivare airport. A two hour transfer
by car will take us to the small harbor of Kebnats and a short
fifteen minute boat ride to Saltoluokta Mountain Lodge. After
arrival you could take a nap, walk in the area, or try the sauna
until dinner is served 18:00.
It is also possible to arrive at Kiruna or Luleå airports,
but that would mean an additional 1.5 - 2 hours in a car.
To an additional total cost of approx. 1300 USD (from Gällivare)
each way it is also possible to make the transfer by helicopter.
Day two
Our first day trip goes to a place called Björkudden. It
is owned by the Saami artist Bill Öberg, who also run a restaurant
on the precincts. There is light food waiting for us, as well
as a chance to talk with the artist and order handicraft items.
He has had the intention to make a stock of different items for
visitors to buy, but he never get the time. Always busy working
on the previous orders. On our way to Björkudden we will
walk on one of the largest mountain moors in Sweden, Ultevis moors,
which are calving lands for the reindeer belonging to one of the
Saami villages. The vegetation is low and hiking is easy, but
we need to ford one stream. This hike is about 13 km. We will
return to Saltoluokta by boat.
Day three
Today's hike, to start with, will take us to the Pietsaure Saami
summer camp 7 km away. In addition to the natural beauty there
is a chance to enjoy lunch in a small local café. Char,
reindeer meat, and coffee is on the menu. A boat ride will later
take us to the other end of the Pietsaure lake, from where we
have an 8 km hike to the "waterfall cabin". You have
the option of having dinner and staying one night in the cabin,
or returning by boat to Saltoluokta for the evening. The "waterfall
cabin" is very basic which mean no toilet or bathroom. Today's
hiking distance: 15 km.
Day four
This day is reserved for free activities.
Day five
Our goal on the fith day, weather permitting, is the summit of
Lulep Kierkau.
The round trip is about 14 km. Mostly easy to walk paths, but
with some steep parts.
Lunch will be on the summit, with a great view of the adjacent
area.
Day six
Time to say good bye.
After the boat transfer to Kebnats, I will drive you back to the
airport.
