Today's trail

Day 5, Tjäktja - Sälka, 13 km

Stoney trail at the beginning

At the beginning it is not too bad and the trail is still visible between the stones.

A looong strech of duckboards

Water running everywhere at rain, but during sunny days these duckboards are just a convenient way to cross large fields of stones.

If you stop and look back...

Looking back, we can see the 1416 meter peak of Azik in the distance, and to the left a nameless slope above the Tjäktja cabins.

Stone field

Duckboards alternate now with a not so clear trail. In thick fog without a compass you could get seriously lost.

Just a little bit more...

Almost at the highest point of this trail now! You can see the emergency shelter on the top of the pass.

Looking south from top of Tjäktja pass.

Here we are on the top of Tjäktja-pass looking south, with the emergency shelter behind our backs. The descent to Tjäktjavagge in front of us is pretty steep, the most difficult part along this trail. But it is nothing to be afraid of. It doesn't involve any real climbing, just pay some extra attention where you put your feet. The mountain in front of us is Geargeoaivi. 1471 meters.

Tjäktjavagge seen from Tjäktja-pass

Tjäktjavagge below us.

Down in Tjäktjavagge.

Down in the valley now. Compared with the stony parts earlier today, this is like a fast highway. And the flowers are back.

Tjäktja-pass behind us.

That is were we came from. You can see the trail coming from the lowest part of the ridge, the Tjäktja-pass.

And into the distance the trail continues.

About 4 km remain to the cabins now.

Occasionally the trail gets a little bit stony.

We will be able to see the Sälka cabins soon, on the other side of the small hill in front of us.
