Mielkeriehppi

A small gorge with flowering slopes on both sides. Only a very short walk away from the Sälka cabins, this is a not to be missed spot if you are the least interested in arctic flower hunting.

Mielkeriehppi can be visited as a part of the Kings Trail all inclusive package. We'll reach the area day 5, when we hike between Tjäktja and Sälka, and it is one of possible day trips day 6.

Mielkeriehppi gorge and the Sälka mountain

Melting snow and ice has carved its way deep down into the ground thru thousands of years, and the 1635 meter Mt. Sälka still has the means to keep the water running all summer.

Tjäktjavagge seen from the slopes of Mielkeriehppi

Tjäktjavagge and the area around Sälka cabins seen from the slopes of Mielkeriehppi, about 250 meters up from the valley. This gorge is only 2 easy kilometers away from the cabins.

A wider section of the gorge

In June, when the snow is melting, the rocky bottom of this photo would probably be all covered with fiercely running water. The slopes are steep, but it is possible to get down to the bottom if you would fancy that.

Narrow part of the gorge

For most parts the Mielkeriehppi gorge is too steep and narrow for anybody to climb down.

Vertical layers of stones

Usually you can't see vertical layers of stone in Sweden, but here we have it.

Light green, dark green, silverish green...

It doesn't feel too far fetched to say that you could probably find most of the arctic species of flowers in Sweden right here in Mielkeriehppi.

Distant peaks

If you would get tired of looking at flowers, you can always raise your head from the ground and let yourself be immersed in the spirit of this place.

Potentilla field

Here we are at an altitude of about 1000 meters, and this is as far as we go, unless of course, you don't mind engaging yourself in a more strenuous effort to climb one of the surrounding peaks.

Last green meadow before the stone fields begin

Same meadow as above, but opposite direction. Last green area before the stony, barren slopes of Mt Sälka begin. To our right (not visible in this photo) we have a lower mountain, only 200 meters to the top, and on the way up we might see some species that were not found around the gorge. The mountain belong to the Sälka massive and is part of an other possible day trip in the area. These two trips can be combined and done in one day. More information here.
