In the northwestern parts of Kyoto, there is a popular recreation area, called Arashiyama. That is were the Katsura river, that flows thru the western Kyoto, exits the mountains and starts its journey thru the plains all the way down to Osaka. During the warm summer months it's a conveniently closely located premier spot for the towns people, and visitors alike, to cool down from the worst heat during the days. Vendors of various foods and other necessary stuff, to make the visit a complete experience, are lined along the riverside. Small stores and boutiques off all kinds can be found in the area, as well as gardens, temples, and shrines. Not to forget restaurants. For the production company at the local Hollywood, Uzumasa, it is a perfect location to the get that authentic Kyoto feeling. There are some good walks in the hills along the river where monkeys can be seen, and at some rare occasions, maybe a bear. Kingfishers and dragon flies has it as their home, as well as carps, wild pigs, and other wildlife. If you are prepared to part from some of your money, boat rides down the river are arranged, with or without food. It is also a popular place for couples to rent a small rowing boat, and to slowly float along the banks under the maples. At summer families come to the river for a picnic and for a swim, and in autumn it is a very popular and famous spot for its autumn colors.
